A comprehensive FOUR-skills examination in the German language aligned to the A1 level of the CEFR*. It serves as mandatory official proof of basic German proficiency (Einfache Deutschkenntnisse) required by the German Embassy in Pakistan for spouse settlement and family reunification visas.

About the exam:

• 4-Component testing structure: Listening (Hören), Reading (Lesen), Writing (Schreiben), and Speaking (Sprechen)
• Administered by accredited examining bodies including the Goethe-Institut / Goethe-Zentrum and ÖSD

• Testing everyday basic interactions, essential vocabulary, simple sentence formation, and practical comprehension

CEFR A1 is the mandatory requirement for the following German visa categories:

• German Spouse Visa / Family Reunion (Ehegattennachzug / Familienzusammenführung)
• German National Visa (Type D) & Au Pair Visa Routes
• EU Blue Card Dependant Visa Requirements

Upon passing the exam with a minimum score of 60%, candidates receive an internationally valid certificate from the Goethe-Institut or ÖSD. This certificate must be included with your original visa application dossier submitted to the German Embassy in Islamabad or the German Consulate General in Karachi.

Visa requirements are set according to German immigration law. Applicants must confirm embassy guidelines to ensure timely exam slot reservation and document readiness.

*Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), developed by the Council of Europe, defines international language competency scales from A1 to C2.

Exam Structure & Preparation Modules

The Start Deutsch 1 exam consists of 4 parts:

• Hören (Listening - 20 Mins): Short everyday conversations, phone messages, and public announcements.
• Lesen (Reading - 25 Mins): Notes, classified ads, signboards, and informational bulletin boards.
• Schreiben (Writing - 20 Mins): Completing standard forms and drafting a short formal or informal email/letter.
• Sprechen (Speaking - 15 Mins): Group interview covering self-introductions, spelling names/numbers, asking for information, and formulating requests using flashcards.
